Recycling batteries

Don’t ever throw batteries in the bin. They contain toxic heavy metals which will hurt the environment - exposing it to acid and lead. If you have to use batteries at all, then make sure to buy the rechargeable type. They still contain the heavy metals, but at least you will need fewer of them. There are so many alternatives today, that I try not to use anything that needs a battery at all. Devices can be solar-powered, or wind-up and won’t cost the earth.

If you can use the mains power, then this is always the better alternative to batteries. When a battery does run out don’t just throw it in the bin. Call your local council and be sure to find out where you can dispose of them.
